Despite Apple famously maintaining a walled garden with its products, it’s wireless earbuds, the AirPods work fairly well with Android smartphones.

And they are set to get even closer to Google’s mobile software, as thanks to the AirpodsforGA app from DotArrow, the Google Assistant can now be activated through a pair of AirPods.

Tapping on the AirPods when they’re paired with an iPhone activates Siri, but with AirpodsForGA, a tap on either earbud can now fire up the Google Assistant, arguably the smartest virtual assistant available for smartphones.

The Assistant activation phrase ‘OK Google’ can also be used, though tapping an earbud is likely to be a little less conspicuous.

There are also a few limitations to bootstrapping the AirPods to work with Android devices, notably with Android’s media buttons and the app not firing up when a phones is locked.

While there are plenty of wireless on-ear and over-ear headphones available, thewre aren’t a huge amount of wireless earbuds, and certanily not those with the rather interesting design of the AirPods.

But DotArrow’s new app helps make the AirPods more appealing to Android fans without forcing them to shell-out for an iPhone 8 or the upcoming iPhone X.

With more phones beginning to abandon the 3.5mm headphone jack, wireless headphones and earbuds are set to become more popular, so we can expect to see more in the market before too long.

And Google also has its own Pixel Buds wireless earbuds, which not only cut put the need for cables but also come with some machine learning powered real-time language translation, which arguably make the AirPods look a little basic.

Do you have a pair of AirPods or does the unique design put you off? Have your say on Twitter or Facebook.
